Leos Carax goes God(ard) mode in this essay film that starts off a self-reflective autobiography, then gradually reveals itself as a playful jab at self-reflective autobiographies. It’s Not Me traces its origins to a cancelled exhibition at the Centre Pompidou where the French auteur was asked, ‘Where are you at, Leos Carax?’ Carax responds by revisiting his life and filmmaking journey with a mixture of genuine sincerity, refreshing candour, and wry humour. He digs into age-old as well as modern artistic, philosophical, and political concerns with sharp wit but never claims to provide an answer. What emerges is a celebration of the cinematic medium itself, where only the image (and Jean-Luc Godard) reign supreme. Along for the ride are fan-favourite characters Monsieur Merde (Denis Levant) from Holy Motors (2012) and Baby Annette from Annette (2021).
