sr is a visually striking essay-documentary that intricately weaves together myth, nature, and human history that spans continents and centuries, blending historical facts with poetic visuals.
The film’s title references the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph ‘sr’, meaning giraffe, which serves as a central motif throughout the film. Hartlaub uses this majestic animal as a symbol of endurance, grace, and historical significance, linking it to cultural narratives across 30 locations worldwide.
By taking a sweeping, epic approach and through its immersive storytelling, sr goes beyond the conventional nature documentary and adds philosophical musings to provoke thought on the interconnectedness of life across history and cultures.
