This cult documentary on the making of Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo (1982) is often hailed as the gold standard of behind-the-scenes filmmaking. It mirrors the subject of Fitzcarraldo itself: an obsessive adventurer’s quest to build an opera house in the Peruvian Amazon.

An important document to understand what it means to be burdened with the desire to stage such visionary artistic encounters and the entirely oppositional ethical burdens of the creative process. This is best captured towards the end as we listen to Herzog talk about the jungle, and you know that each moment of filmmaking is transforming everyone irrevocably.

The 4K restoration—a meticulous two-year effort that resulted in a breathtaking 6.5K frame-by-frame remastering, including audio restoration replacing all music—creates a more vivid experience for contemporary audiences.
