This cult documentary on the making of Werner Herzog’s Fitzcarraldo (1982) is often hailed as the gold standard of behind-the-scenes filmmaking. It mirrors the subject of Fitzcarraldo itself: an obsessive adventurer’s quest to build an opera house in the Peruvian Amazon.
An important document to understand what it means to be burdened with the desire to stage such visionary artistic encounters and the entirely oppositional ethical burdens of the creative process. This is best captured towards the end as we listen to Herzog talk about the jungle, and you know that each moment of filmmaking is transforming everyone irrevocably.
The 4K restoration—a meticulous two-year effort that resulted in a breathtaking 6.5K frame-by-frame remastering, including audio restoration replacing all music—creates a more vivid experience for contemporary audiences.

Les Blank (1935–2013) was an internationally renowned independent filmmaker, whose poetic work offers intimate, idiosyncratic glimpses into the lives, culture, and music of the passionate people at the periphery of American society. His film topics have included Cajun, Mexican, Polish, Hawaiian, and Serbian-American music and food traditions, Afro-Cuban drummers, Texas blues men, and Appalachian fiddles, among others.
A documentary filmmaker since 1972, Maureen Gosling has served as a director, producer, editor, sound recordist, and distributor. She is best known for her 20-year collaboration with the late Les Blank on over twenty films. In 2023, Gosling was honoured at the Centre Pompidou’s cycle ‘Americana: Les Blank & the Ross Brothers’ and in 2024, at the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley’s Les Blank Retrospective. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture, Arts and Sciences.
