Founded by Mr F.H. Sidhwa and Mr K.A. Kooka, the Regal Cinema was inaugurated by Sir Fredrick Sykes the Governor of Bombay on the 14th of October 1933. The first movie screened there was Laurel and Hardy’s ‘The Devil’s Brother’. Designed by Charles Stevens, son of the famous 19th-century architect Fredrick Stevens, Regal was the first art deco cinema house in India. Its extensive mirrorwork interiors were designed by the Czech artist Professor Charles Schara. The “Theatre Magnificent” as it was then called has a long list of firsts to its credit. It was the first cinema in India to install cinemascope, the first air-conditioned cinema house in India and also the first in the country to have an underground car park. Regal has hosted several Filmfare award functions and has also been hosting the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival since 2015.
