Film Screenings
South Asia Competition
Our main competition offers a platform for the year’s breakthrough South Asian and South Asian diaspora feature-length films, highlighting the unique contemporary cinematic voices in the region.
Focus South Asia
MAMI’s non-competitive section of films of all lengths spotlights talent from South Asia and South Asian diaspora while highlighting the wealth of narratives and styles that make our experiences manifest.
World Cinema
The World Cinema section has been an integral part of the festival since its inception in 1997. This segment offers a panoramic view of the most ambitious and accomplished new films from around the globe.
Dimensions Mumbai
A competitive programme for young filmmakers (ages 18-25), Dimensions Mumbai features 5-minute short films that creatively capture the spirit of the city that MAMI calls home.
Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films
Introduced in 2016, this is a competitive section for shorts where aspiring and established directors alike bring exceptional storytelling to curious audiences. These films of up to twenty minutes are from filmmakers across India and the Indian diaspora.
Restored Classics
This section was first featured at the festival in 2012. The festival is deeply committed to honouring and preserving the cinematic legacy and this section showcases restored classic films from India and around the world.
For more information, please visit our line-up.
Daily Red Carpet
This is a one-place daily red carpet to ensure that filmmakers, cast, crew, festival guests, and jury members grace the red carpet in an organised manner.
Strands
Strands, a new way to browse our programme, returns to MAMI. Strands are just that: threads that tie together films from different sections and different parts of the world. They are an alternative approach to looking at the film festival selection, away from rigid demarcations and towards a connective flow in the programme. Through Strands, we highlight emerging themes that stand out to us, the team, and hopefully you, the viewer.
Strands repeated from last year include It’s Complicated, Modern Anxieties, and Queering Gender. The new standouts are Between Worlds, Facing the End, and Female Gaze. Coming of Age stories are ever present at MAMI and they form their own strand this year.
There’s something for everyone in Strands.
Industry Programme
MAMI Mumbai Film Festival’s Industry Programme is envisioned as a forward-looking platform that brings together filmmakers, domain experts, and key players in the industry through conversations and knowledge-sharing sessions aimed at fostering a healthy discourse. The sessions will cover a wide range of topics around the craft, the business of filmmaking, and emerging trends that are poised to shape the industry in the coming year. The programme is hosted by MAMI in collaboration with the Festival’s Community Partner, Soho House Mumbai, from 21 to 23 October 2024, at Soho House Mumbai, Juhu.
This year's sessions include diverse discussions around distributing independent feature films and short films, elevating production values on modest budgets, artificial intelligence and its impact on the filmmaking workflow, building progressive workplaces and ensuring safety standards in the film industry, navigating music agreements, licenses, and fair film contracts, implementing sustainable filmmaking practices, weaving compelling narratives surrounding gender and sexuality, and much more.
The schedule is out now. Read further for how to book sessions.
