Festival Directors Meet by Rajveer Dhanak | A Report

The Festival Directors Meet for the highly anticipated Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2023 took place on the 28th of October, 2023, at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. Hosted by the festival's Artistic Director, Deepti Dcunha, the event featured the participation of Italian journalist Carlo Chatrian and filmmaker Marco Mueller as key panel members.

Deepti Dcunha commenced the meeting by introducing herself and sharing her vast professional experience. She initiated a discussion with Carlo Chatrian on the challenges of distributing foreign language films in the Indian market, as the two linked these challenges with the overarching goal of the MAMI film festival: to serve as a bridge between filmmakers and potential distributors.

Carlo Chatrian introduced himself, recounting his journey from being a film critic and journalist in Turin, Italy, at a time when the city lacked a robust film community, to becoming the Artistic Director of the Berlin International Film Festival. Chatrian emphasized that film festivals are not merely platforms for showcasing films; they also serve as hubs for the exchange of creative ideas. He highlighted the role of MAMI and similar festivals worldwide in fostering these ambitions.

The event drew a distinguished audience of festival directors from various regions in India. Deepti Dcunha facilitated their introductions, allowing them to shed light on their respective film festivals and the significant impact of cinema on their local communities.

The introductions began with Somendra Harsh, founder and director of the Rajasthan International Film Festival, followed by Ashok Rane, a prominent film critic and founding member of the Ajanta-Ellora International Film Festival, who stressed the importance of festival directors understanding their audience and programming films accordingly. Rane also emphasized the crucial role film festivals play in enhancing film literacy among viewers.

Marco Mueller furthered the conversation by highlighting the historical significance of the Film Society movement in India in bringing forth the works of talented filmmakers from across the country.

Tanushree Hazarika, the director of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival, provided insights into the unique film scene in North-East India that prompted her and acclaimed filmmaker Reema Kagti to co-found the festival.

Deepti Dcunha concluded the event by revealing the festival's endeavor to take a gentle step into the realm of film markets. The board had extended invitations to film sales agents from across the nation, recognizing the challenges associated with releasing foreign language films in India. This initiative, known as "Meet the Sales Agent," aims to create synergies and foster connections between filmmakers and sales agents, bridging the gap between exceptional foreign films and the Indian audience.

The Festival Directors Meet culminated with each attendee, a diverse blend of filmmakers, festival directors, journalists, and critics, having the opportunity to introduce themselves, reflecting the collaborative spirit that defines the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.
