The best films come from our regional industries - that’s where the true essence of India lies, in our culture: Shivendra Singh Dungarpur
At the opening ceremony, Dungarpur shared,“When I stepped in as MAMI’s director a couple of months back, we had very limited funding, and the future looked almost uncertain. But when I see the number of people here tonight, I know that MAMI can grow stronger because everyone has come purely out of their love for cinema. Cinema, cinema, cinema - that’s what I live for.

I have a mission to make MAMI a showcase for the best independent and regional films. It’s essential that we support regional cinema. The best films come from our regional industries - that’s where the true essence of India lies, in our culture. I’ve been fortunate to restore some of the most magnificent regional films. There is beauty in our cinema, reflecting who we are and where we come from.”
Dungarpur continued, “We are going to make this festival bigger - you have to give me a year. I need time to build it. We will showcase the best documentaries and retrospectives from around the world.”

Payal Kapadia told the audience,“I have been attending MAMI for the past 12-13 years. I was a student at Xavier’s, and I spent every October here, watching films. I’m very happy to present my film to you all today. Every time I travel around the world, I tell people what Mumbai is and what it means to live here. Now, I don’t need to do that.”
Deepti
shared,"Payal Kapadia brought glory to our country by not only being the first Indian filmmaker in years to have her film selected for the main competition at Cannes but also by returning home with a Grand Jury Prize. For those of us who know her, while this has been an incredible journey, we saw it coming. She has consistently pushed boundaries with her films, ever since her days as a student at FTII. She’s a true cinephile - a Mumbai girl, but also a MAMI girl - who has always been excited about attending this festival in her hometown. It feels more than fitting that a film about Mumbai, by a Mumbai filmmaker, opens the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.”

Maine socha Karan Johar aur Shabana milke kuch toh jadoo dikhayenge, kuch toh kamaal dikhayenge, jo Shabana ne dikhaya kamaal: Waheeda Rehman
MAMI presented the Excellence in Cinema Award to Shabana Azmi at the opening ceremony. Welcoming her, Shivendra Singh Dungarpur mentioned that he had shared the screen with Azmi in R. Balki’s Ghoomer, where he played her son.
While announcing the award, Dungarpur said, “It’s a privilege for MAMI to honour Shabanaji, an iconic actor, with the Excellence in Cinema Award.”
Honouring Azmi, Waheeda Rehman playfully remarked, “Tum aur tumhare miyan ke beech mein main kya bol sakti hoon? Aur Kaifi saheb aur Shaukat aapa – in sab ke beech mein? Kuch nahi. Sach mein.”
Rehman continued, “Abhi recently inki ek film aayi thi Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. Toh maine jab yeh news suni, toh socha ki Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani mein Shabana kya kar rahi hai? Meri samajh mein nahi aaya. Aur maine socha, Karan Johar aur Shabana milke kuch toh jadoo dikhayenge, kuch toh kamaal dikhayenge - jo Shabana ne dikhaya kamaal.”
'I’d like to thank all the directors I’ve worked with - from Shyam Benegal to Steven Spielberg'

In her acceptance speech, Shabana Azmi said,“Filmmaking is a director’s medium. Actors get the most prominence because they are in front of the camera, but we know that this is only possible because there’s a whole team behind the scenes working to enhance our strengths and cover our weaknesses. Personally, I have never been able to rise above the director or the role. At this moment, I’d like to thank all the directors I’ve worked with-from Shyam Benegal to Steven Spielberg.”
